MLS has long been known as a league of parity, but few could of predicted the results of this past weekend.
In a week that saw several projected favorites fall, several MLS teams picked up statement victories to surge their way up the SBI MLS Power Rankings. Chief among them was the Houston Dynamo, whose 5-0 demolition of FC Dallas proved as shocking as it was explosive.
Elsewhere, the San Jose Earthquakes and Philadelphia Union combined to knock off last year’s MLS Cup participants, while the Colorado Rapids picked up a major result against the LA Galaxy.
It wasn’t all bad for some of the league’s elite, though, as the Montreal Impact and Toronto FC picked up points against the two New York clubs.
Here is a look at the SBI MLS Power Rankings for Week 2:
SBI MLS Power Rankings (Week 2)
1. (Last week-6) SPORTING KANSAS CITY (2-0-0)
LAST WEEK: Defeated Vancouver Whitecaps, 2-1, on Saturday
THIS WEEK: vs. Toronto FC on Sunday
OUTLOOK– Dom Dwyer led the way as Sporting KC picked up a big-time victory over a fellow playoff contender. Even without Benny Feilhaber, Brad Davis and Justin Mapp, Sporting KC has looked strong this season, and logic would say they should hit their stride in the coming weeks as several of their stars return to the lineup.
————————-
2. (9) MONTREAL IMPACT (2-0-0)
LAST WEEK: Defeated New York Red Bulls, 3-0, on Saturday
THIS WEEK: at FC Dallas on Saturday
OUTLOOK– Through the first two weeks of the season, the Impact have arguably been the league’s best team. Ignacio Piatti continues to shine, as the Argentine has dazzled with both goals and assists. The early season successes comes without Didier Drogba leading the line. With the Ivorian waiting in the wings, the Impact have the potential to be even scarier once the summer months hit.
————————-
3. (12) SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (2-0-0)
LAST WEEK: Defeated Portland Timbers, 2-1, on Sunday
THIS WEEK: At LA Galaxy on Saturday
OUTLOOK– A major result for the Earthquakes, who were certainly the more efficient team in Sunday’s defeat of the Timbers. Chris Wondolowski continues to do what he has done for years by scoring important goals, while Quincy Amarikwa’s stunner proved a fitting winner. With a derby clash next on the schedule, the Earthquakes can really prove their legitimacy this weekend against the Galaxy.
————————-
4. (1) PORTLAND TIMBERS (1-1-0)
LAST WEEK: Lost, 2-1, to San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday
THIS WEEK: vs. Real Salt Lake on Saturday
OUTLOOK– Jack McInerney’s late goal aside, the Timbers put forth a sloppy performance against the Earthquakes on Saturday. Undone by the crossbar several times, the Timbers were the better, but more careless, side over the weekend. The reigning champions will now have their backline tested a bit with Liam Ridgewell set to miss an extended period of time.
–————————-
5. (15) HOUSTON DYNAMO (1-0-1)
LAST WEEK: Defeated FC Dallas, 5-0, on Saturday
THIS WEEK: at New York Red Bulls on Saturday
OUTLOOK– What a win from the Dynamo, who absolutely thrashed rivals FC Dallas in a statement victory if there ever was one. From the opening minute, the Dynamo were far and away the better team and looked determined to score as many as possible. Andrew Wenger continues to shine for his new club, and the Dynamo will hope his form continues as the team looks to compete in the crowded West.
————————-
6. (16) REAL SALT LAKE (1-0-1)
LAST WEEK: Defeated Seattle Sounders, 2-1, on Saturday
THIS WEEK: at Portland Timbers on Saturday
OUTLOOK– After essentially giving away a pair of points in their opener, RSL did well to steal two of their own with Saturday’s late win over the Sounders. Joao Plata has scored or assisted on each of the club’s goals this season, as the Ecuadorian has been as hot as any player in MLS to start the 2016 campaign.
————————-
7. (4) TORONTO FC (1-0-1)
LAST WEEK: Tied New York City FC, 2-2, on Sunday
THIS WEEK: At Sporting KC on Sunday
OUTLOOK– After falling behind two goals, TFC bounced back to earn a hard-fought draw at Yankee Stadium. Sebastian Giovinco continues to star, while the team’s new-look defense has largely held its own throughout the opening two weeks. With Jozy Altidore still yet to feature, TFC could become even more dangerous going forward, but will need to continue to navigate a difficult season-opening road trip.
————————-
8. (2) FC DALLAS (1-1-0)
LAST WEEK: Lost, 5-0, to Houston Dynamo on Saturday
THIS WEEK: At New York Red Bulls on Saturday
OUTLOOK– In what was certainly the most shocking result of the weekend, FC Dallas was absolutely thrashed in the first Texas Derby of the season. To put it lightly, FC Dallas just didn’t show up. FC Dallas is still certainly viewed as a favorite in the Western Conference, but a true MLS Cup team will learn from Saturday’s effort and ensure that it doesn’t happen again as the season continues.
————————-
9. (5) LOS ANGELES GALAXY (1-1-0)
LAST WEEK: Lost, 1-0, to Colorado Rapids on Saturday
THIS WEEK: vs. San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday
OUTLOOK– The Galaxy exploded in their opening week win against D.C. United, but failed to find any sort of attacking cohesion in Week 2. Playing without Giovani dos Santos, the Galaxy never looked threatening, even with Week 1 hero Mike Magee leading the charge. Defensively, Jelle Van Damme looked solid in his MLS debut in locking down Rapids’ forward Kevin Doyle, giving some positive takeaways heading into Week 3.
————————-
10. (3) COLUMBUS CREW (0-2-0)
LAST WEEK: Lost, 2-1, to Philadelphia Union on Saturday
THIS WEEK: at Chicago Fire on Saturday
OUTLOOK– An opening week loss to the Timbers is acceptable, but a defeat at the hands of the Union is one that will frustrate the Crew a great deal. Once again, the Crew held the bulk of possession while firing their share of shots. Those aspects should provide some optimism, as the Crew must merely clean up the little things going forward.
————————-
11. (13) NEW YORK CITY FC (1-0-1)
LAST WEEK: Tied Toronto FC, 2-2, on Sunday
THIS WEEK: vs. Orlando City on Friday
OUTLOOK– After a positive Week 1 result against the Fire, NYCFC will take a point from Sunday’s clash with TFC. Unveiling a new three-at-the-back formation, Patrick Vieira’s side looked good for a majority of the game against the reigning MVP in Sebastian Giovinco. The first half in particular proved positive, as NYCFC may have finally found a defensive shape worth exploring following last season’s deficiencies.
————————-
12. (8) SEATTLE SOUNDERS (0-2-0)
LAST WEEK: Lost, 2-1, to Real Salt Lake on Saturday
THIS WEEK: vs. Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday
OUTLOOK– Four matches into their season, the Sounders are without a win. After falling in CONCACAF Champions League play, the opening weeks of the MLS season have proven just as difficult for the perennial playoff contender. Early returns have been less than ideal, but the Sounders still have plenty of wiggle room to make a move to add pieces should the current blip turn into anything more.
————————-
13. (10) NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION (0-0-2)
LAST WEEK: Tied D.C. United, 0-0, on Saturday
THIS WEEK: vs. Philadelphia Union on Sunday
OUTLOOK– The Revs dazzled the league with a 3-3 draw in their season opener, but Saturday’s tie with D.C. United was far less climactic. The Revs fired shots from every which way, but failed to muster anything of note inside the D.C. box. As the team continues to find its feet, the Revs will need to be a bit crisper, as games like Saturday’s are ones that should be yielding a full three points.
————————
14. (14) ORLANDO CITY (0-0-2)
LAST WEEK: Tied Chicago Fire, 1-1, on Friday
THIS WEEK: at NYCFC on Friday
OUTLOOK– Cyle Larin hasn’t shown any signs of a sophomore slump through the opening two weeks. The Canadian forward added his second in as many games and could have easily been awarded a penalty kick that would have likely sealed a Lions victory. Orlando City still needs to work on finishing games, but this year’s team has the firepower to improve as the season wears on.
————————-
15. (17) PHILADELPHIA UNION (1-1-0)
LAST WEEK: Defeated Columbus Crew, 2-1, on Saturday
THIS WEEK: vs. New England Revolution on Sunday
OUTLOOK– A huge win for the Union, who saw offseason signing Chris Pontius lead the charge to a defeat of the reigning Eastern Conference champions. Goalkeeper Andre Blake continues to look spectacular in net with six additional saves after shining in Week 1. If the Jamaican star continues to play like the league’s best goalkeeper, the Union have hope to compete as new pieces continue to gel.
———————–
16. (7) NEW YORK RED BULLS (0-2-0)
LAST WEEK: Lost, 3-0, to Montreal Impact on Sunday
THIS WEEK: vs. Houston Dynamo on Saturday
OUTLOOK– An ugly, ugly start to the season for the Red Bulls. The reigning Supporters’ Shield winners have given up five goals and have yet to score in what was likely their worst two-game stretch of the Jesse Marsch era. After shining in Week 1, Gideon Baah struggled in Week 2, but both he and the Red Bulls will be looking forward to moving past difficult clashes against what may just be the two best teams in the East.
————————-
17. (11) VANCOUVER WHITECAPS (0-2-0)
LAST WEEK: Lost, 2-1, to Sporting KC on Saturday
THIS WEEK: At Seattle Sounders on Saturday
OUTLOOK– Even prior to Jordan Smith’s red card, the Whitecaps were the second best team on the field in Saturday’s loss to Sporting KC. The Whitecaps conceded a majority of the possession from the first minute, even if their fight while a man down in the second half did prove impressive. Many expected better from this Whitecaps team to start the season, and a clash of winless contenders looms with Saturday’s visit to Seattle.
————————-
18. (20) COLORADO RAPIDS (1-1-0)
LAST WEEK: Defeated LA Galaxy, 1-0, on Saturday
THIS WEEK: At D.C. United on Saturday
OUTLOOK– A late Marco Pappa goal sealed all there points for the Rapids, who did well to hold down a talented Galaxy team. As demonstrated throughout 2015, the Rapids defense is among the most stout in the league. That fact was apparent again on Saturday, as the Raids continue to show small signs of improvement ahead of Jermaine Jones’ introduction.
————————-
19. (18) CHICAGO FIRE (0-1-1)
LAST WEEK: Tied Orlando City, 1-1, on Friday
THIS WEEK: vs. Columbus Crew on Saturday
OUTLOOK– The Fire overcame a red card to claim a point on Friday against Orlando City, as new midfielder John Goosens paid immediate dividends in the form of an assist in his first MLS appearance. The Fire will need to continue to put their new pieces together under Veljko Paunovic, but the first two weeks have seen plenty of positives to go with the largely defensive aspects that need fine-tuning going forward.
————————-
20. (19) D.C. UNITED (0-1-1)
LAST WEEK: Tied New England Revolution, 0-0, on Saturday
THIS WEEK: vs. Colorado Rapids on Saturday
OUTLOOK– Heading into the season, D.C. United’s attack remained a major question mark, and those questions have yet to be answered through two weeks. Ben Olsen’s team failed to get much going offensively against the Revs, who wasted plenty of opportunities of their own. D.C. United will need to find goals somehow, or it could be a long season.
